Climate and Energy

It took many decades for us to realize it, and it is still not universally accepted in science or or society, but the fossil-fuel energy resource sector is linked closely to the vital carbon cycle that regulates Planetary climates on a wide variety of time scales. This series of thematic papers explores issues related to environmental regulation and mitigation of energy projects in terms of their potential impacts on the climate and other human health issues.

The series was initiated with a series of papers stemming from a conference on the Geoscience of Climate Change, held at the Banff Centre, Alberta in 2008. It includes a Special Issue of Geoscience Canada (v. 40, #3, September 2013) dealing with the environmental management of the Alberta Oil Sands. The series will continue as opportunity arises to deal with the broad, intersecting issues of climate change and energy. It is not likely that these themes will fade in today's changing world.
