Stone is the oldest natural resource used by humanity, and it remains a vital part
of our civilization. We still live in the stone age, whatever we may think. From the primitive
carvings found at Paleolithic and Neolithic sites, to the exquisite carvings of renaissance Italy, we
have used stone to represent our lives and environment, and to shape the Earth. A recent
IUGS initiative seeks to define 'heritage stones' that have exceptional significance to human culture
and innovation.
The Heritage Stones series in Geoscience Canada seeks to highlight these important resources
and characterize them. It seeks to understand their origins and
scientific significance, and to advocate for their preservation and
recognition. Our definitions are broad - and international in their scope. There is
a transition zone where scientific description meets architecture and art, and both meet history, and
this is what we seek to explore.
