Andrew Hynes Series: Tectonic Processes

This series will honour the long career and seminal contributions of Andrew Hynes, at McGill University in Montreal. Over 40 Years, Andrew has given insight to our understanding of fundamental concepts in geosciences, ranging through time from the Archean to the present, and across disciplines from mineralogy and petrology, to structural geology, tectonics, geodynamics and geophysics. In all these efforts, he quantifies the quantifiable without embellishment, clearly states his assumptions and inferences, and provides testable models.

Andrew's ongoing interest in geodynamic processes led him to publish papers on the extrusion of deep-crustal rocks in collisional zones, and the relationships between continental growth, crustal thickness change, and Earth's thermal efficiency. He has tackled the problems of subduction initiation, the extension of the upper mantle, and the applicability of subduction-linked tectonic processes to the Archean. He has been an outstanding mentor and role model for students, and his contributions to geoscience in and beyond Canada are enormous.
